OVERVIEW
Literally meaning 'The Land of Passes', Ladakh is the place where nature at its best leave the human senses spell bounded. Abundance of natural beauty scattered across its mountains, valleys and passes, Ladakh is an unadulterated jewel in Indian crown.
Among its many passes, 'Khardung La' is the most sought after as it is the highest motorable pass in the world which makes it even more tempting for bike enthusiasts. Other popular passes in the region are 'Chang La Pass'; 'Bara-lacha la pass'; 'Taglang la pass'; Fotu La pass' etc. For other adventurous excursions, the rugged terrain of Ladakh makes it ideal for trekking and mountaineering. It is deemed as one of the most strategic places by the mountaineers. White water rafting, camel safaris, Polo and archery are other tourist sports.
The locals are predominantly Buddhists and are deeply influenced by the Tibetan Buddhism. From ancient times Ladakh has been ruled by various dynasties, who went all over the place and built various exclusive monasteries. There are a string of monasteries scattered to every nook of the place. Some of the internationally recognized monasteries are 'Hemis Monastery'; 'Karma Dupgyud Monastery'; 'Matho Monastery'; 'Spituk Gompa'; 'Shanti Stupa'; 'Lamayuru Monastery'. Ladakh is also a structural treasure because of its ancient palaces like the 'Stok Palace' and the 'Leh Palace', both highlighting the Ladakh royalty.
The beauty of the masculine passes is magnified with the feminine touch of the pristine Ladakh lakes like the 'Pangong Tso Lake'; 'Tsomoriri Lake'; 'Tso kar lake'. The colours of these lakes are enthralling, like 'Pangong Tso Lake' is known to change from emerald green to varying hues of blue in a matter of few hours under certain atmospheric conditions.
With its monasteries, lakes and passes, adventure sports and warm locales, Ladakh is a must visit tourist destination for families, honeymooners or adventure seekers.
