OVERVIEW
The city of Port Blair can also be termed as the miniature India and claims the title of being the largest city in the “Andaman and Nicobar“ island group. It exhibits a tropical monsoon climate and attracts nature lovers owing its blessedness to the calm beaches, few most interesting museums, farms and national parks.
The city is enriched with history which can be traced to the infamous “Cellular Jail” most popularly known by the name of “Kala Paani” which was constructed during 1896 and 1906. It becomes all the more interesting as during the immediate period after the First war of Indian independence, this jail was used by the Britishers as a prison.
One of the most amazing ecosystems is well exhibited in the ‘Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park ’ where rare forms of corals and underwater creatures are very well complemented in the exclusive blend of 15 small and large islands, and the open sea. The ‘Gandhi Park’ too provides amusement facilities with all sorts of water sports, Scuba Diving and amusement rides.
The beach lovers are not at all disappointed when they come across the most pleasing, sandy and shallow beaches of all times. Corbyn's Cove Beach, Munda Pahar Beach, Chidiya Tapu, Collinpur Beach, Wandoor Beach and many others create a distinct aura with their golden or silver colored sands, the huge swaying coconut and palm trees and the additional element of the sunset.
Just like the farms, there are many involving museums like National Memorial, Samudrika (Naval Marine Museum), Forest Museum, Zoological Survey of India (Museum) which put up a mind boggling display of the varied oceanic species, and their environment.
The Andaman & Nicobar Administration organizes several tourism festivals annually, namely Subhash Mela, Vivekanada Mela and Block Mela. This festival lasts for around a fortnight and exhibits a true display of cultures, acknowledging national and international artists for their talents. Port Blair catches maximum attraction by the numerous water sports competitions it organizes such as ‘Nicobari Hodi race’ along with Puppet show, Magic show,Floating restaurant, and others. One doesn’t have to think twice about this destination when it comes to being a nature-lover.
