OVERVIEW

Known by the name of ‘Ceylon’ until 1972, the island country of Sri Lanka owes its beauty to its blessed location. The island continent inhibits a combination of rich heritage, thrills, amazing wildlife, pleasing festivals, thereby, making the place a living bliss with its very essence.

The beach lovers are showered with a long stretch of 1600 km of Coastline, beautified with the huge palms. The best of the best beaches in the continent include Tangalla, Beruwala, Mirissa, Bentota and Unawatuna, along with the innumerable water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking, yachting, water skiing, scuba diving. The beaches in the country are probably the ideal location for getting a perfect tan. If one is a fan of whale-watching and Dolphin-watching, the ‘Alankuda Beach’ is the place you need to visit for sure. The golden beaches adored by the coral reefs contribute successfully in making Sri Lanka, an eternal paradise.

If one looks into the rich heritage of the continent, one can really be amazed with a history expanding over a span of 3000 years. Not only the continent exhibits some of world’s ancient cities including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Digamadulla, it is blessed with the huge palaces, temples, monasteries and theaters with an intricate architecture carved out of stone lay. In fact, the most famous and exquisite of all is’ Anuradhapura’ which was founded around 5th century B.C and was the first capital of the country.

The Flora and Fauna lovers are in no way disappointed with the small-sized country exhibiting the top five biodiversity hotspots in the world. Not only the country inhibits some of its rarest breeds but the large families of cetaceans, which include the mighty blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins, found the vast oceans of Sri Lanka, their personal home. The continent, no wonder, owns one of the richest diversity of amphibians in the world, comprising of over 160 species of amphibians. ‘Bundala National Park’ is a must visit place for it is not only known for sunbathing, with the huge coconut trees making up the landscape, but also the amazing fresh sea-food.

Since the country welcomes all sorts of cultures and religions, Sri Lanka never falls shorts of festivals and grand celebrations, making it one of the few countries with the highest number of celebrations, happening almost monthly. Of all the festivals, the Sinhala-Tamil New year festival in April is, no doubt, the most important cultural festival in the country since it marks the beginning of the New Year & the end of harvesting season. While the Kataragama Esala Festival is another kind of a multi-religious festival where one sees devotees walking on fire in order to show their piety to Lord Kataragama. Just like the country welcomes all religions, it doesn’t fall short of displaying a wide range of food cuisines such as the traditional Moor dishes which reflect the Middle Eastern influences but the local Burgher community persists on upholding dishes like Lamprais that are significant to their culture. Most amazing is the fact that traditionally all dishes are served on the Plantain Leaf. The tasty food, the heart-pleasing festivities along with the serene beaches contribute in making the island continent of Sri Lanka, a living paradise, which no one would want to miss anyhow.
